Michael Nutter was sworn in as Mayor of Philadelphia on January 7, 2008. Born and raised in West Philadelphia, Nutter graduated from Saint Joseph's Preparatory School and then, the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Over the years, he has served as city councilman, an appointee to the Board of City Trusts, and Chairman of the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority Board. A self-proclaimed “reformer,” Nutter has worked tirelessly to improve social conditions—from his strong stance on crime to his plan to revitalize schools in the Philadelphia School District to his Clean Indoor Air Worker Protection Law which made it illegal to smoke in restaurants and many bars.
