Gene Carboni
Father Judge High School
When students think technology at Father Judge High School, they most likely think of Mr. Gene Carboni. Between his role as founder of the Microsoft IT Academy at Judge and his everyday use of technology in his classroom, he is a technology star.
Mr. Carboni launched the Microsoft IT Academy, which allows many Father Judge students to become certified in the Microsoft Operating System. In conjunction, the program teaches the students about computer hardware. Students must take apart a computer, explain all of its inner workings, and then put it back together. For some students, this is initially a very daunting task, but Mr. Carboni is there to guide them along the way.
Mr. Carboni also utilizes technology in all of his daily classes. Students use a class wiki, or a collaborative website, where they can submit content relevant to class. The wiki drives class discussion online and allows students to research topics and contribute their findings for everyone to see. His students also must submit all assignments electronically, utilize an online textbook and use online forms of communication to stay in touch with Mr. Carboni and their classmates.
When the Archdiocese of Philadelphia implemented the Powerful Learning Practice initiative, a professional development program that facilitates immersion experiences for teachers in 21st Century learning, technology and teaching methods, Mr. Carboni took an active role by serving as the leader of Father Judge’s cohort, or team. His tremendous energy and dedication to technology can be seen in his encouragement of other teachers to take advantage of every piece of technology available to them. He has also been the catalyst behind many professional development in-service sessions about technology offered to the school’s faculty.
Mr. Carboni has taught at Father Judge for more than 15 years. In addition to teaching, he serves as a moderator for the school’s Student Council.
