Archdiocese of Philadelphia Opens Academic Year with Focus on Innovation in the Classroom

Many Back-to-School Events Planned Across Five-County Area

PHILADELPHIA (September 3, 2010) -- More than 72,000 students who attend 167 parish and regional elementary schools, 17 high schools and four schools of special education within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia will head back to their classrooms on Wednesday, September 8, 2010. Numerous back-to-school special events are planned throughout the Archdiocese to usher in the season.

On Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 7:30 a.m., Mary Rochford, Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and The Honorable Michael A. Nutter, Mayor of the City of Philadelphia, will officially kick-off the start of the Archdiocesan school year at Incarnation of Our Lord Parish School, 425 W. Lindley Avenue. Mayor Nutter and Superintendent Rochford will greet both parents and students, and students will offer a prayer for the 2010-2011 school year.

“We have a legacy in education that spans a century, and have provided more than 15 million students with a world-class Catholic education that challenges them academically and develops them spiritually,” said Rochford. “As our world has changed and evolved, so has the approach to Catholic Education for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. We are infusing more state-of-the-art technology and 21st century learning practices into our curricula, and our students will notice this as they head back to our classrooms this week.”

Rochford will also preside over a special ceremony on Thursday, September 9 at 2 p.m. at Bucks County’s new regional Catholic school, Holy Family Regional Catholic School, in Levittown, Pa. The school will mark the union of the four parish school student bodies who have joined together to form Holy Family Regional with an elaborate and symbolic puzzle piece cake.

Lastly, the Archdiocese celebrates innovation with the opening of a new, state-of-the-art high school, Pope John Paul II High School at 181 Rittenhouse Road in Upper Providence Township. More than 900 students will enter the doors for the first time on Friday, September 10 at 7:30 a.m, to experience the latest in educational technology.  All students at Pope John Paul II will receive his/her own netbook.  Many more parish elementary schools, such as Mother of Divine Grace in Port Richmond, will provide netbooks to students in 5th through 8th grades.
